As the song goes, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” But let’s not forget—it’s also one of the most creative times of the year. From festive decor to themed parties and perfectly wrapped presents, the holiday spirit is all about adding a personal touch.

This year, take your celebrations to the next level by incorporating thoughtful design and messaging. Whether you explore online tools or partner with a marketing professional, there are endless ways to elevate your holiday cheer. Not sure where to begin? Here are five ideas to spark your creativity!

1. Send Personalized Holiday Cards

Holiday cards were a staple in my house—every year my mom would mail them to family and friends, and every year we would receive them! Personalized cards are a timeless way to express gratitude, share milestones, and spread joy.

How to Design Holiday Cards:

  • Select a Unique Design: Try websites like Paper Culture, Zazzle, or Shutterfly for creative templates. For more customization, use Canva to design your card with your preferred colors, fonts, and graphics.

  • Add a Personal Message: Include a heartfelt message or family photos (pets included!). This is your chance to make the card uniquely yours!

  • Consider Digital Options: If you’re pressed for time and can't make it to the printer, digital cards are a fast, eco-friendly option that still deliver holiday cheer.

2. Send Out Holiday Party Invitations

Who doesn’t love a themed holiday party? Whether it’s an ugly sweater bash or a cozy hot chocolate night, the invitation sets the tone. Skip the group text this year—send a beautifully designed invite instead!

How to Design a Holiday Party Invitation:

  • Make It Eye-Catching: Use tools like Canva to design invitations that match your theme.

  • Add Personality: Use fun titles like “Sleigh Bells & Sips” or “Frosty Festivities.” Include all the key details: date, time, location, and attire.

  • Amp It Up with Music: Turn your invite into a video by overlaying music. Here is one easy hack to do this:

    • Download your invitation as a PNG and send it to your phone’s camera roll.

    • Open Instagram Stories.

    • Add your invitation and choose music you would like to overlay.

    • Hit the three dots in the top right corner and save your story to your phone.

    • Now, you have a PNG with audio to share with family and friends!

If you don’t use Instagram, Canva has music for you to choose from that you can add to your PNG directly on the platform! They don’t have mainstream music, but there are plenty of upbeat and cheerful options.

3. Share Your Favorite Recipes

Food is at the heart of tradition! Why not share the magic by gifting your favorite recipes?

How to Design a Recipe:

  • Choose a Nice Layout: Platforms like Canva offer recipe card templates that you can customize.

  • Add Photos: Snap pictures of the finished dish—and maybe a fun candid of you in the kitchen!

  • Share Digitally: Save your recipe as a PNG or PDF and share it via text, email, or social media. Be sure to invite others to share pictures of how their dish turned out too!

4. Write Thank You Notes

Gratitude is the heart of the holiday season. Whether it’s a thoughtful gift or a kind gesture, a thank-you note goes a long way.

How to Design Thank You Notes:

  • Select a Special Template: Use websites like Shutterfly or Canva to create a card that matches your style.

  • Add a Personal Touch: Share your appreciation with words and images that feel genuine and heartfelt.

  • Send It Over: Download or print your card to send over. If you enjoy the feeling of showing gratitude and appreciation during the holiday season, remember anytime throughout the year is a good time to do the same!

5. Create Gift Guides

Want to make gift-giving stress-free for everyone involved? Create a curated gift guide! It’s a great way to share what you’d love to receive—or to organize donations for a cause close to your heart.

How to Design Gift Guides:

  • Choose a Template: Have a look at Canva for single pages or multipage designs.

  • Get Specific: Include images, prices, and store links to make shopping easy.

  • Share Smartly: Save your guide as a PNG or PDF for easy sharing with friends and family.

Tip: Don’t send people a gift guide if you think they might take offense or would be hurt by the gesture. Finding gifts to surprise your loved ones is part of the charm of the season, so make sure not to take away from something they enjoy!

Why Use a Marketing Partner?

If you’re short on time or want an extra creative edge, working with a marketing partner can make your holiday projects truly shine. A professional can help you refine your ideas, design custom templates, and ensure every detail reflects your personal style.

Conclusion

The holiday season is more than a time to celebrate—it’s a chance to share creativity and joy. Whether you’re designing cards, planning parties, or writing heartfelt messages, there are countless ways to use graphic design and marketing to make the season magical.
